Stuttering at the end of a flight

Postby adam2019 » Tue Aug 25, 2020 12:24 pm

Hi all,

I apologise in advance for another "stutter" question, but I am a little stuck as to the reasons for my issue. I am begging for some help.

My PC specs are;

  • i9 9900K 3.6ghz with stock turbo boost enabled up to 4.9ghz
RTX 2080ti with stock overclock to approx 1.9ghz
    2gb RAM @2100mhz
    2tb SSD
I am running p3dv5 on a fresh install of windows 10 with activesky running and EA enabled
NVIDIA is set to prefer max performance under power management mode (everything else default)
    HAGS on

I come across stuttering at the end of a flight using certain add on aircraft. The one I suffer alot in is the Aerosoft A330. For example, today I was approaching stock standard RJBB after a 3h flight and had stuttering while maintaining approx 20fps on average. Whenever this happens, it is always during an approach, normally below 10000ft.

In the same aircraft, during takeoff/cruise and landing, and in many other areas of the world I will maintain 60-100fps at all times with no noticeable stuttering. GPU utilisation is usually always around 95% and 75 degrees and CPU sits at around 60% and 65 degrees. I also never see such issues with PMDG aircraft (if that helps).

During today's occurrence I was passing through 3000ft when it got quite bad and dropped to around 20fps. GPU was at 69 degrees and running at 60%. CPU was 66 degrees and running at 62%. RAM 12.5/32gb.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this? Please let me know if you need any further info.

Thanks!

@Adam2019,

2 GB of RAM - is that a typo?

Anyway, running Active Sky and EA (both are beta!) on a 3.6 GHz CPU can certainly cause stutters. With beta software, all bets are off.

Hi Jorgen,

Thanks for the reply. Yes a typo, I meant 32.

I'll give it a try with EA off. Any other live weather engines you can recommend ?

Actually, you should try it with both EA and Active Sky off and see what happens first.

You might also want to overclock your CPU to the other side of 4 GHz, maybe even 4.5 GHz, but forget the turbo boost mode. What you want is a regular steady clock rate.

Appreciate the feedback.

I am curious though, as Its permanently sitting at 4.68, idle and when under load. Surely if it were limiting at such a speed it would be working harder than 70% when needed? CPU never goes above 70 and GPU sits in the 90s.

I'll experiment with the beta stuff off.

Hi.

I share with you my case. When I bought P3D V5 I was running it with the following equipment:
System: I7-4930 4.4 Ghz., 48 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz, RTX 2080 Super, 1 TB SSD WD Blue, Windows 10 Pro.
Add ons: Orbx base pack, openLC north america, buildings HD, trees HD, Libraries, Central rockies, Vector.

I have two cases about stuttering one was with the introduction of orbx vectors and the other one was with some defaults airport - P3D V5 out of box.

Example with Vectors:

Test one: Taking off from KRND plus: Orbx base pack, openLC north america, buildings HD, trees HD, Libraries, Central rockies, Vector. From 00:54 to 01:00 we can appreciate some stutter.

Test two: Taking off from KRND plus: Orbx base pack, openLC north america, buildings HD, trees HD, Libraries, Central rockies. With out Vector. Outcome no sttuters.

With the release of MS2020 I decided to update my equipment. With these i proceeded to perform the same tests on P3D V5
System: I7 10700K 5.1 Ghz, 16 GB DDR4 4000 Mhz, RTX 2080 Super, 1 TB SSD WD Blue, Windows 10 Pro.
Add ons: Orbx base pack, openLC north america, buildings HD, trees HD, Libraries, Central rockies, Vector.

Outcome: Same like before, stutter in both cases.

The only solution I found on both computers was. I realized that i had 1, in msconfig - boot - advanced option - number of processors so when i run prepard3d V5 in the task manager i set priority above to normal and uncheck the CPU 0 in affinity with this the stutter were gone in both cases.

Worth trying.

Hi Alox,

Thanks for the reply!

Very interesting ... can I confirm, you set CPU 0 to off, and set the priority to normal?

I currently run with CPU 0 off, and priority set to high. I use process lasso at the moment.

Thanks

SOLVED...

I've pinned the issue down to Enhanced Atmospherics. I've had problems for months but finally solved it by cycling the EA button on and off.. I'll get a few hours of smooth flight from p3dv5 before the issue of wildly fluctuating fps starts again. Yes I am aware it is in beta, but hope its a known issue awaiting a solution in a HF.

Happy to provide further information if needed..

Thanks
